An update

I'm in Glasgow today, shopping for a few things, so I thought I'd dive into the easycaff to get online for half an hour or so and let you all know how things are progressing.

First of all: cause of death has gone down as myocardial infarction, so a heart attack, basically. That's my Mum, Scottish to the last. :o)

The funeral is going to be at a crematorium in Ayrshire on Thursday afternoon at 1pm. I'd appreciate a few thoughts around that time, not "in my direction" as such, as thoughts don't really have it in them to fly though the air with the greatest of ease, but just because knowing that some friends are thinking of me will help me.

There is going to be a Church of Scotland service carried out by the minister from Dunlop kirk, which is appropriate because she was a member, even if she didn't go very much and indeed had been turning more agnostic over recent years, I think.

I am also going to do a non-religious reading (well, the minister's coming round to do the order of service with us tomorrow morning, but I'm sure she'll be OK with it). That's one of the reasons I've come into Glasgow today, actually - to find a copy of Richard Dawkins' Unweaving the Rainbow (my copy's in my flat in London), and I found one in Borders. There is a lovely section at the beginning of the first chapter where he writes about how lucky we are to be in a position to die in the first place, given that most potential people are never even born. It will mean more to me than the religious stuff, and I imagine it will to many others too.

I'm going to have to give the performance of my life to be able to keep it together as I do it, though. So, as I say, a few thoughts would be appreciated. Then I can imagine you all standing behind me shouting me on. :o)

*smile* Much as I often get pissed off by Dawkins, I think I remember liking that passage a lot.

I read Death is nothing at all at my mother's funeral. Standing up to do it was the hardest part (and one of the hardest things I've ever done) - once I'd stood up, I found everything else flowed from that initial action.
