Went to the SMBis picnic last night and ran into Philip Attwood, so it turned into an exceptionally boozy evening. I got exceptionally merry and smoked - the third time I have done so whilst drunk after giving up (or should that be "giving up" :o) ).

So, I got thinking about it just now and I started wondering - what would I really *miss* if I didn't drink either? And I thought: "a glass of red wine with steak, or white wine with Lemon Sole goujons or Vegetable Tempura in a Thai restaurant, or a cocktail with a fancy meal". I don't feel I would miss getting drunk, really, or being very drunk late at night on a tube home. And now I appear to have got into a bit of a habit with smoking while plastered and at no other time, there would appear to be an excellent incentive not to get plastered any more. That, and the million and one reasons that usually go with it.

So then I thought, well, I never have more than a glass or two of wine with a meal, and it doesn't tend to make me drunk.

So then I thought, what about giving up recreational drinking, and just drinking with meals instead?

So I'm going to do that.

So there you go. I am truly becoming boring in my old age.

On Saturday night I witnessed someone so drunk they would have merited the whole Twelve Monkeys video. Fortunately for us (but not so for [livejournal.com profile] silkything, whose kitchen sink had to be bleached before anyone could go near it) this person is not one of our circle of friends. He arrived drunk, continued to drink and fell over both barbecues before locating the sink to be sick in. Apparently, this is regular behaviour for this bloke.

Getting drunk can be quite nice I expect, provided it doesn’t have the frequency or results that it does for the person mentioned above. And as you point out, giving it up entirely would mean you missed out on nice drinks with meals. I wish you luck with your decision, whether it stays rigid or flexes a bit back to ‘drink only on big occasions’ or wherever.

I’m coming from the other direction in that I used to define as teetotal (sips of champagne at big celebrations aside and the once every other year ‘oops that appears to have been a mistake’ getting drunk) but am now having a bit now and then. Andy offered me wine on Saturday and I said only a tiny bit, so he was putting it into the cup in pipette type measures then looking back at me after each miniscule splash to see if that was enough. And then there is Baileys, not alcohol at all, just ooh so creamy.

By the way, you are about as in danger of becoming boring as I am – which I’ve decided is not at all. :P :P :P :*

Charming.

Apart from the cost, not really liking the taste and being able to get the effects another way, what keeps me on the 'a few half glasses of champagne a year' level is seeing people who are drunk...
