I got bitten by a bed bug last night and actually woke up and caught it, squished it and stuck it to the wall so I could examine it this morning to see what it was. This was in Stef's bed. Ironically, I have suspected for several days that I have bugs in my own bed, as I have been getting big raised weals. I was rather looking forward to a night without pests. No such luck.

However, it is stirring me into action. I'm calling the council at lunchtime to get them to come over and get rid of the bed bugs, the cockroaches I discovered in the kitchen on Monday, the mouse and any other pest of hell fucker that is living in my filthy house. I am going to put up the £100 - £150 myself and I hope that any housemates online reading this (hint hint not very subtle) will help keep the house cleaner than we have before, seeing as I'm being good enough to put up cash I can't really afford to sort our initial problem out. I will do my bit for cleanliness too, believe you me.

Fuckers.*

And I better ulti-matum Stef to get his bed bugs sorted out too. Bloody antique furniture.

* The pests I mean, not my lovely housemates.

Dear me! I thought I had experienced most of the most common of the foul parasites of our species, but bedbugs are a new one on me! Where on earth do they come from, how do you get rid of them etc?

As for roaches, the woman it pleases me to call my exwife and myself were plagued by these for far too long in a flat we shared in Liverpool. They are flesh creepingly vile and make you feel filthy, and many a fine old fight we had about housework standards. The Housing Association tried many methods to get rid of them with limited success, and eventually it was revealed that the flats had been built on the site of an abbatoir, which was put forward as the reason for the recurrent infestation.

Sorry about the ramble through my tawdry past, just trying to express sympathy really.

:o) Thank you for sympathy. With any luck we will get these myriad infestations sorted out, or at least contained to a bearable level.

Bed bugs live in your bed, or behind the wallpaper, or in any number of dark recesses nearby and come out at night to feed on slumbering blood. They are spread around like any other insects e.g. hitching a lift on a cat etc. but apparently they have been making a real comeback recently as they have become stronger and increasingly resistant to available pesticides. Bedbugs are a bugger to get rid of because they can survive for ages in the deep recesses of your bed's joints, so really you have to get the professionals in.

I dislike cockroaches. However, at least the ones I found under the fridge were only half an inch long and couldn't fly. Unlike the "midgie clouds" of cockroaches in Taiwan which could be as long as 2 inches each and could fly at your head like a Concorde.

It should also be pointed out that I have been to the gym this morning, which included me taking a swim and a shower, so people can shake my hand today without fear of becoming infested with bedbugs. ;o)

Yes, that should certainly reduce the risk of cockroaches. Let me delight in explaining, however, that it won't stop bed bugs, as the latter are not necessarily indicative of filth. Many people get bitten all the time but don't know, because they've developed immunity. It's only really a problem because I'm coming out in great itchy red blotches with tiny sticky patches in the middle where the skin's broken. Not all over the place, you understand - there's only one bad one at a time and then they fade. But it feels like being attacked by mosquitoes.

Is there anything that makes a difference to the likelihood of getting the little fuckers then?

Sasha has just had to fork out about $100 (sorry, I couldn't find the 'pound' sign) to get rid of moths from the living room carpet. She hasn't been able to go into her living room for days because there's chemicals everywhere and if you sit down on them (the carpets) then dire things will happen to your skin.

Crawly things though, eek!

Hope they go and stay gone.
