Arse. A huge pile of young Oriental people just trooped in, being shown around. I thought they were Japanese at first and they had almost disappeared before I realised they were Chinese and thus I missed my chance to show off. During my last 15-seconds-or-so window I was trying to call stuff to my head, but kept mixing up Chinese and German inside my brain and so decided it would be best to stay silent.

I think there is probably no combination of languages which is more likely to leave me understood by absolutely nobody in the whole world than a conflation of Chinese with German. :o)

i know what you mean. five years after i stopped learning mandarin and had forgotten something around 99.99% of it, i was taking my French GCSE oral and had one of those moments when you know the word, you just can't remember it. my brain kept trying to tell me to say it in mandarin - and then switched to latin!
oh well, i hope you get another chance soon...
