OK, so [livejournal.com profile] stefanc and I are going to Berlin tomorrow for a week, and being joined by some of his pals on Monday morning. We're going to visit some of his relatives there, and we will of course be taking in quite a few of the obvious sights.

So here's my question: is there anything - any place, any shop, any club, any gallery etc. - that anyone here would recommend we go to? I'm looking for suggestions a bit off the beaten track, as we're bound to take in things like the Reichstag, the former Wall site etc. Any ideas? I'm going to be out of internet reach from about 5pm tomorrow, so do let me know before then if you can...

Vielen Dank!

Won't be as pretty this time of year (unless the trees have started to blossom, but Unter den Linden is a lovely place for a walk. Near the Brandenberg Tor if I remember (tho I'd double check if I were you).

There is a holocaust museum that is worth visiting but emotional.

Other than that, no suggestions.

From memory: go check out the Fernsehertuerm in Alexanderplatz, which is the big spike with the ball stuck on it. The view from the ball is cool.

Clubs - I used to go goth/alternative clubbing around the Prenzlauer Berg area. My favourite club was Klangfabrik, on Sundays, in Dunker on Dunkerstrasse - chilled out and friendly; also worth checking out what's happening at K17 in Kadinerstrasse, which is bigger and has a garden with a fire! I met all sorts of cool folks in these clubs - it was K17 where I unexpectedly bumped into a pal from Edinburgh. Definitely go clubbing wherever you go - Berlin is so alive and the clubs are where you feel it best.

I envy you!

No suggestions but I'd love to hear yours when you get back - have never been to Berlin, A & I are considering making it our first Europe-by-train destination (not including Paris), so we'd be keen to get your thoughts once you have.

Also intend to go to Prague by train sometime, once we've tested the new train links with closer destinations first.

The Wannsee Conference villa - where the 'Final Solution' was planned - has one of the best small museums I've seen anywhere.

The big museums on 'museum island' have some glorious ancient stuff from the age of 'dig it up and cart it home' age of archaeology.

A friend of mine from NY shows stuff here occasionally and the exhibit that is on right now looks pretty cool. Unfortunately I think no attached event this weekend but maybe a way to piddle away an hour during the day...

Friends, I have managed to find...

I agree with Paul about the TV tower. I also remember spending a very pleasant morning in the zoo.
