From the BBC website's Talking Point.

"At the end of my road is a big red 'C' marking the start of the congestion charge area. I own both a car and a bicycle. I know that this five pound a day will stop me driving. I will become healthier, wealthier and will get to places twice as fast by cycling. I just needed the push as like most motorists, I am a lazy git."
Jamie, Elephant and Castle, London

My own journey into work today (two buses - the recently introduced 476 route [Stef's house - Euston], then route 18 [Euston - Paddington]) was noticeably quieter. In fact, it seemed as if the whole thing is going to be an absolutely gigantic success. Hurrah!

I notice all the signs that have been put up say "Congestion charge - Central Zone".

Maybe this is to avoid redoing all of them in six months' time...

*lol* very astute, Mr. M.

I make no bones about it, by the way. I freely admit to having a militantly dictatorial anti-car stance. I would be happy to see the charge at £100 a day. :o)

I reckon Steve Norris is onto a loser by pledging to repeal the tax if he gets voted in as mayor next time round. After all, the most natural Tory voters are the wealthier car drivers, who can soak up the charge with barely a twinge and will get clearer roads for their money. I wouldn't be at all surprised if wealthier drivers start coming out in favour of the charge soon.

Tee hee hee. Good old Red Ken.

And the ones saying 'Congestion charge zone 5 miles'...

Elephant and Castle was staggeringly quiet at 9:30ish this morning. Whether that's because everyone was stuck somewhere else or the effects of being a school holiday, I don't know.

I'd like to see the roads the way they were during the petrol 'crisis' a couple of years ago.

It's good to see headlines saying "Not a Disaster" for a change!

Apart from some minor niggles (early morning market workers being charged despite going away from the traffic when leaving work, the issue of low paid workers who do need cars, and the fact that I have yet to see a shop where you can pay the charge), I think on the whole it's a damn good idea.

If it means buses in the centre of town can move faster than walking pace, I'm all for it. And let's face it, the zone is *tiny* - it doesn't even include King's Cross or Euston or Hyde Park, and it stops at 6.30 pm so people can drive into town to go out for the evening.

And the more complaints I hear the less convincing any of them are. The Standard devoted a page to a 'low paid' woman living in Marylebone, complaining she wouldn't be able to nip to the shops at lunchtime to buy her daughter new socks, and it wasn't her fault that her nearest shops were Oxford St. For crying out lound woman - there's all the shops of Marylebone High St, and more to the point the zone stops just where you'd be going to Oxford St, at Marble Arch. And I can't believe it's ever quicker to drive a mile or two to Oxford St and to park than to walk. Except maybe at 3am when the shops are shut.

Still, it's half term this week, when traffic is supposed to drop by 17%. Here's hoping we don't get gridlock on Park Lane and Euston Road and the other boundaries next week...

of course, if the (C) is outwards from you (ie you are 'in the zone' - wonder if that'll become as good as once saying you were 0171-?) then you should have registered for the 90% discount. It seems something like 80% of residents haven't done so yet and will be getting fined for having a car on the street (I assume if it is in a garage or on a forecourt off the road then no fee is payable...)

Ken was on the tele yesterday saying that he didn't expect to need to increase the £5 per day but *did* expect/intend to enlarge the area (wonder how far... north/south circular?) if it worked well; he said that boroughs/people living just outside the zone "wanted to be in the congestion charge area" - ahuh.

Anyway, best way to get rid of congestion is to ban the school run......

will be getting fined for having a car on the street

No. CC becomes payable when the car is in motion. When it's parked, no matter where, the CC does not need to be paid.
